Regents on Trial

The trial for former Regent Jim Hayes, who resigned from the UA Board of Regents amidst a federal investigation of grant money designated for LOVE Social Services, has been postponed until 2008. According to the Anchorage Daily News, the trial was delayed to allow Hayes and his wife time to see more evidence that the prosecution had collected against them during an earlier search of their home.

Another regent, Carl Marrs, entered the spotlight of Alaska's legal system this week. Marrs testified in favor of John Ellsworth, who is being sued by Cook Inlet Region, Inc (CIRI) for a number of charges related to money use. They say Marrs approved of Ellsworth's actions, and trusted that Ellsworth would not have done anything improper. Marrs' own actions while on the board of CIRI have also been questioned, but no legal action is currently being pursued against him. Neither was available for comment.

New York Times Reporter's Lecture

Andy Revkin, an environmental reporter from the New York Times, is scheduled to lecture at 7 p.m. on Thursday night in the Charles W. Davis Concert Hall. Revkin will sign his book about visiting the North Pole with a team of explorers and present an illustrated talk about his work and the North. He has covered climate change and other issues pertinent to the North for a number of years. Revkin, who will travel to UAS and UAA before arriving in Fairbanks, was invited to lecture as part of the International Polar Year Visiting Author Series.

Student Organizations

Students interested in registering their organizations can now do so online anytime before October 1. Before completing the new registration process, a member of the organization needs to register as a user of the program. Active groups from last year are allowed to continue functioning with university sponsorship for a short time period until they are able to complete the registration process. The new program is a shift from previous forms of registration, so leadership program personnel ask that students be patient as any flaws in the system are smoothed out.

Students interested in joining any of the returning or new organizations are invited to the Student Organizations Fair October 10 and 11 in the Wood Center. The fair will run from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. both days.
