Gun restrictions should be re-examined following Virginia Tech tragegy

Many questions have surfaced about the safety of the students on campuses following the Virginia Tech tragedy. At the forefront of the debate is the issue of gun control.

However, even the most stringent of gun control laws would not have stopped this tragedy or any other involving guns. If some lunatic is willing to take lives, illegally procuring a firearm is the least of his worries.

This tragedy has taught us that the police, government, and schools cannot protect people in the face of true evil.w

The people need to take steps to protect themselves, and one way of doing that is by allowing people to carry concealed firearms to prevent crime. I

t is hard to say with any certainty what would have happened in the Virginia Tech shooting if some students and faculty had been armed and able to deal with the onslaught of Cho Seung Hui. It is reasonable to estimate that if someone could have met force with force that day there could have been fewer lives lost.

I appreciate the letter from Chancellor Steve Jones after this horrible. However, if the chancellor would like to keep us safe then he should repeal the rule on campus that does not allow firearms to be carried by law-abiding citizens. That way, if something like this ever did happen on our campus, faculty, students, and staff would be in a position to end the crisis by defending themselves instead of just trying to run away from the massacre.
