Letters to the editor

What next, cross burning?

In the Constitution of the State of Alaska Article I, Section 1, it says: "This constitution is dedicated to the principles that all persons have a natural right to life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, and the enjoyment of the rewards of their own industry; that all persons are equal and entitled to equal rights, opportunities, and the protection under the law; and that all persons have corresponding obligations to the people and to the State"

After reading our state's constitution I do not understand how Reps. John Coghill and Mike Kelly can state that the Alaska Supreme Court has over stepped their bounds.

That is, unless they think their bigotry, religious ideology, and homophobia trumps our state Constitution.

It is beyond belief that in this day and age when a disgraceful percentage of Alaskans do not have health care coverage, elected representatives, and so called Christians, want to deny health care benefits to any Alaskan.

Thank God that Alaskans have such a great Constitution and thank God the Alaska Supreme Court is doing its job by standing up to these demagogues and protecting all Alaskans regardless of who they live with.

"Girl Power"

I am writing in regard to the editor's "Girl Power" editorial (April 3). Most of what was said is true. ASUAF does deserve to see a woman president. However, I would like to clarify a point in the editorial that I believe is misleading.

I would like to set the record straight on the job of the vice president of ASUAF. The position as vice president requires more than simply "overseeing the distribution of money to clubs via Club Council." The vice president's job entails serving as the Elections Board chair in the fall elections, attending the Student Advisory Board at TVC, and filling the need for leadership such as during presidential absences, blood drives, and leading the first Senate meeting.

The vice presidency is not an occupation with no merits and not a waste of a "strong female student leaders" ability.

Flat Knavery

It occurs to me that the oversight of a review of the recently closed and student produced "Winter Shorts" is an exceedingly glaring one.

The Sun Star is a student newspaper. Run entirely by students, authored and produced by students, and presumably for students. It's insulting that two organizations on campus aimed at providing an amateur playground for students of a professional craft cannot count on the support of each other.

The "Winter Shorts" has been a staple of the Theatre Department for many years, and the Student Drama Association responsible for its production continues to evolve and utilize a level of professionalism rarely imbued to a campus club.

Frankly, it's inexcusable not to cover a campus event such as the shorts. You've done a disservice to your readers, to the students of this university who faithfully read the Sun Star, and most importantly you've snubbed your peers, your colleagues, and your friends.
