‘Cheerleader' kicks-off gay movie fest

The Student Activities Office is sponsoring a film festival focusing on lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and trans-gendered themes.

This week's film, "But I'm a Cheerleader," has a tagline declaring it "a comedy of sexual disorientation."

In the movie a young cheerleader's parents become convinced that their daughter is a lesbian because she likes listening to Melissa Ethridge and is a vegetarian. They, with help from her friends, force her to attend True Directions, a school focused on re-orienting "confused" gays.

The free film screening will be at Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Hess Recreation Center at the MBS Complex. Movies will also be shown in the Pub on Mondays for audiences over 21.

Fairbank's only fantasy and science fiction convention will be this weekend.

The event, sponsored by UAF student club ArctiCon, will be held Saturday and Sunday in the Wood Center. The convention will feature games and best costume prizes.

The convention is in the Wood Center and from Saturday at 12 p.m. to 12 a.m. A special masquerade dance in the Ballroom at 9:30 p.m. will feature belly dancers and the UAF Steel Drum Band.

The event continues Sunday from 1 to 5p.m. Admission is $10 or $5 after 8 p.m. Saturday.
