Nanooks Greentree, Campbell go pro
Two junior Nanook hockey players have signed contracts with pro and semi-pro teams in the last two weeks.
Junior left-wing Kyle Greentree, UAF's top scorer for the past three seasons, signed a two-way contract with the Philadelphia Flyers of the NHL. Greentree reported to a Flyers affiliate, the AHL's Philadelphia Phantoms, early last week to practice.
Junior defenseman Darcy Campbell signed a free-agent NHL contract two weekends ago.
He reported to the Columbus Bluejackets last week.
Campbell's deal is unique because he went directly to the Bluejackets team and not to one of their affiliates, as Greentree did with the Flyers.
U.S. Senate honors UAF rifle team in bill
A resolution sponsored by Alaska Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Ted Stevens recognizing the Nanooks as winners of the 2007 NCAA rifle championship was passed unanimously by the U.S. Senate last week.
Murkowski noted in a press release that the team's ninth national title came in front of a record-breaking crowd for the rifle championships.
"I congratulate the team on their championship performance and wish them continued success in future years," she said. "Congratulations to the community of Fairbanks as well; you represented the spirit of Alaska by cheering on the home team in record numbers."
