Freshman Nanook swimmer Kelly Becker broke into the top 10 at the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday and barely missed competing in the finals.
Becker's time in the 200-yard butterfly was 2 minutes, 7.5 seconds during the race at the Burt Flickinger Center in Buffalo, NY. She missed making the top eight by only 0:19, which would have put her in the finals.
Becker finished second in the consolation round, putting her at 10th overall and earning her an honorable mention All-American pick. Becker's performance in the 100-yard butterfly on Thursday was impressive, but a mistake cost her some time.
Coach Scott Lemley said that on one of her turns she tried to get a breath of air, but instead got air and water, which cost her some time and threw off her rhythm.
"She was really set to make a big drop in her 100 time. She was on her way; her first 50 was right on track," Lemley said in a press release. "She snuck a peek at the wall coming into her second turn and that really proved to be her undoing."
She finished 27th with a time of 59.65.
In her first event, the 1,000-yard freestyle on Wednesday, Becker set a personal best time of 10 minutes, 39.48 seconds to finish in the top 20.
"It's always satisfying to have a (personal) best time," she said in a press release. "Knowing that it is nationals is even more exciting. It was awesome."
Lemley saw the event as an icebreaker for Becker.
"It was not an event we even expected to be here in, so it was kind of a bonus," he said. "She was really ready to swim fast. It was a good swim and a personal best time, so it was a good start."
