art piece of the week

Fortunately for Marcie, she is not actually falling. She happens to be jumping.

Photographer Rebecca Hayes, 23, has a love for capturing moments that are usually fleeting. She is specifically interested in the moment of flight when the subject is posed for an instant, hanging in the air.

"I have a fascination with people in motion," Hayes said. "The picture makes [jumping] last longer than a few seconds."

Hayes has several friends who will jump for her. Her friends understand her fascination and are willing models.

She then takes the photos and turns them into snapshots of a fantasyland.

For this image she inverted the image of her friend Marcie but kept the trees and all the other elements of the background. She then added layers on top of the picture in Adobe Photoshop. She picked visual elements that would complement the theme and ended with a result reminiscent of Alice falling down the rabbit hole.

Hayes has many pictures she picks and chooses from to layer over her photos. She picks pieces with elements that make individual shots into a cohesive photo series that still allows the individual piece to work as a stand-alone shot.

For this photo, she added interesting script and small daises, which contrast with the stark winter trees left in the original image.

The lack of color in the photo is key because it makes it simpler. Marcie stands out as the darkest and most important element of the piece.

"I really like black and white because sometimes color can be distracting," Hayes said. "It works well to create dream-like places because you are more focused on the image of a weird place than you are of the color."

The serenity of Marcie's features is surprising given the situation. It makes the idea of wonderland work.

"I like her pictures a lot," said Marcie Compton, the model in this photograph. "I think she puts a whole lot of creativity in them. They lead you to imagine so many things."

Hayes own a local photography business called Red Shutter Studios. She can be contacted at rebeccameca@hotmail.com.
