After a five-game losing streak that ended with a tight game at Northwest Nazarene, the Lady Nanooks are bouncing back, taking their third and fourth wins in a row this weekend.
Thursday night, the Nanooks started out sluggish but pulled it out in the end to defeat the St. Martins Saints 80-75 at the Patty Center.
UAF then defeated Western Oregon 71-59 on Saturday.
The winning-streak is the best since a four-game streak in January 2005.
Freshman Caitlyn Rohrbach took the Toyota Player of the Game award as she led the Nanooks with a career-high 20 points and 20 rebounds against St. Martins on Thurday.
Sophomore Sheena Brown and junior Kari Reabold both had 14 points and sophomore Cristina Bruketta added 11 to the Nanooks' total.
The Saints had a hot-shooting start, making 56 percent of their shots and Alaska fell behind by 14 points mid-way through the first half
The Nanooks, however kicked it into gear and outscored the Saints in the last eight minutes of the half 25-11.
Rohrbach scored a lay-up with five seconds left and brought the score to 38-36 at the intermission in favor of the Saints.
Alaska's momentum carried over to the second half, and the Saints couldn't keep up.
Although only 41 percent at shooting, the Nanooks hit half of their three-pointers and 27 of 34 free throws. The 'Nooks also tied their season low with only 12 turnovers.
Saturday night, the 'Nooks climbed up a little further in GNAC standings as they defeated Western Oregon 71-59.
Bruketta had a career-high night to help the 'Nooks fend off the conference's leading scorer. Bruketta tallied 25 points with a career-best 6-of-10 effort behind the arc.
GNAC scoring leader Leada Berkey of the Wolves scored a game-high 33 points on 14-of-27 shooting, but Berkey also had half of Western Oregon's 16 turnovers.
Her score surpassed 30 in a game for the sixth time this season, setting a GNAC record. However, without Berkey, the rest of the Wolves shot only 23 percent from the floor, and only one other player scored more than five points.
For the Nanooks, Reabold finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds, junior Joscelyn Shumate contributed 10 points, and senior Mia Seagraves finished with seven points. The Nanooks only led by two points at the half, but took control in the second half with an 8-0 run and never looked back.
Alaska is now 9-11 overall and 4-5 in GNAC play. The team hopes to continue their streak at Seattle and Western Washington on the road this weekend.
