"You are so beautiful, to me. Can't you see?"
These were the words that an old man in the crowd sung to Coach Tavis MacMillan and the Nanooks during Friday night's press conference after their 2-1 victory in overtime versus the Miami Ohio Redhawks. Saturday's reception was much the same after the 'Nooks battled hard to retain a 3-3 tie after forcing an overtime.
Wylie Rogers reinforced his place as the 'Nooks top goalie after making 34 saves on Friday and 18 saves on Saturday.
"That was the most exciting feeling I've had all year," Rogers said about his Friday game.
Friday night wasn't just about goalies.
Fans saw tight game play and some of the best hockey the 'Nooks have played all year.
First period was mostly uneventful with solid mechanics and consistent game play.
But in the last minute the 'Nooks received a power play opportunity from a penalty on the Redhawks Bill Loupee.
They then seized the opportunity at the 8.6-second mark, as Tyler Eckford and Dion Knelsen assisted Kyle Greentree with a shot across the basket from deep to make an desperately needed 1-0 lead at the end of the first.
At the end of the second period, Rogers and Eckford defended against a reverse attack during the last ten seconds.
Eckford, whose stick had just broken from a slapshot, and Rogers defended against two runaway Redhawks who make the shot.
Rogers was able to save at the two second mark.
In the third period tensions ran high as the 'Nooks try to seal a 1-0 victory, successfully doing so until the very last 30 seconds.
At the 23.4 mark Redhawk Matt Christie managed to pop a goal off of Rogers leg pad, forcing an overtime 1-1.
Fans stomped to "we will rock you" and did the wave before the 'Nooks stepped back on the ice letting the players know that UAF needed this win badly.
And that's exactly what the 'Nooks did setting up Aaron Lee for a goal after an assist by Dion Knelsen and TJ Campbell ending the game 2-1.
"That was definitely the best goal," Lee said.
"Momentum is a powerful tool and we've seen what it does on the other end," MacMillan said.
But he added, "Tomorrow night is a whole different game."
And in that regard MacMillan was right.
The Redhawks, stinging from Friday's loss, were looking to regain their composure and put the hurt on for the 'Nooks.
During the first period of Saturday 'Nooks saw this extra pressure especially in power plays as UAF allowed two opportunities including a 12 second five on three play to slip through their hands.
In the end the Redhawks were up 0-1 after getting a goal from Marty Guerin assisted by Justin Mercier and Matt Christie after just 13 seconds into a two minute power play.
Second period saw nothing but a vicious battle as the 'Nooks answered back 1-1 by a goal by Greentree assisted by Darcy Campbell and Curtis Fraser.
Pecking back, the Redhawks managed a goal just 15 seconds after by Mitch Ganzak assisted by Marty Guerin and Matt Christie and bringing the lead back 1-2.
But Greentree wasn't done for the period, shooting another goal in with assistance from Braden Walls and Curtis Fraser.
The game was now 2-2. So close to ending and yet so far with 3:43 left on the clock Miami's Joe Cooper assisted by Bill Loupee rang one off the left goal post for a 2-3 period ending lead.
Knowing they had to come back early and strong the 'Nooks incredibly tied the game up 3-3 just 28 seconds into the third with a goal by Jeff Lee assisted by T.J. Campbell and Lucas Burnett. This score stood for the rest of the period, even during a frantic overtime, leaving fans satisfied with a tie of 3-3.
Nanooks hockey goes on the road this week versus the Western Michigan Broncos.
