UA spam filter for e-mail updated

UA employees with alaska.edu e-mail addresses no longer have to envy the clearer mailboxes of their UAF colleagues after their spam-blocking program got updated last week.

According to Bill Wakefield, a UA tech representative, the new spam program is the same version being used by e-mail addresses with the uaf.edu domain.

"We're just consolidating and making things more efficient rather than managing two different programs," Wakefield said.

The 2.0 spam filter will change e-mail function just slightly, according to an article in the UA newsletter The Statewide Voice.

The update will require users to do a one-time reset of their SMTP server before sending any more mail, and will provide them with one digest of all blocked mail for any given day rather than showing each message individually, the article said.

Hiring underway for new provost

Just short of a decade, Paul Reichardt will turn his title over to someone new at the conclusion of this semester after spending nine years as UAF's provost.

A search committee is currently looking for his replacement, said Phyllis Morrow, committee co-chair and dean of the College of Liberal Arts. The committee consists of people from a several disciplines, all chosen by the chancellor, Morrow said.

Candidates have been undergoing what Morrow says is a standard search process of applications, phone interviews and background checks.
