Former Nanooks plead no contest

Former members of the Nanook basketball team pleaded no contest to charges stemming from thefts occurring on-campus at UAF in September.

Chris Jordan, former lead scorer of the Nanooks, will be sentenced in April with a maximum sentence of one year. Chris Adams, former freshman on the team, made a deal with state prosecutors and pleaded no contest to one charge of first-degree burglary. Adams will serve up to five months in prison, according to the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner.

Both of the players were suspended from the team and banned from the dorms after they were implicated in the thefts.

Adams recently suffered from cerebral injuries and is currently in intensive care in Seattle, said William Satterberg, who is representing Jordan. According to court records, Jordan will pay restitution and his sentence will be reduced to eight months in jail, depending on his cooperation with the state in testifying against Mina Nix.

Nix was accused of holding stolen items for the two former basketball players. Nix's trial is scheduled for this week. Jordan and Adams are both allowed to remain UAF students and will have a clean slate after their probation time is up.

"The important thing about Jordan's and Adams' sentences is that they are going to be able to get it off their record as a felony conviction provided they comply with the terms," said Satterberg.

As of Friday, Jordan and Adams both have not registered for classes for the spring 2007 semester, said Athletic Director Forrest Karr. Jordan returned from a court-approved vacation in Texas on Thursday.
