Men's basketball loses, wins
Staff Report

The Nanook men's basketball team suffered its first loss at the Patty Center this weekend against the Augustana Vikings, but bounced back to win against Florida Tech.

The Vikings beat UAF in an 82-58 blowout on Friday in the Glacier Classic Tournament. The Nanooks defeated Florida Tech 78-68 on Saturday.

UAF faced tough competition from Augustana, which shot 57 percent of its field goals. Vikings senior guard Joey Ryan and reserve center Tom Verdouw scored 14 points each to help defeat the Nanooks, while senior forward Nick Olson pulled-off 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Senior forward Jushay Rockett led the Nanooks with 14 points and nine rebounds before fouling out at 24 minutes. After picking up two quick fouls in the second half, Rockett was sent to the bench, leaving UAF without a key player. The Nanooks shot just 26 percent for the rest of the half.

Back on the court Saturday, Rockett helped UAF defeat Florida Tech with 26 points and 14 rebounds.

Outranked in height, the Nanooks still out-rebounded the Panthers 43-32. Junior guard Kenny Barker scored 20 points and nine rebounds, while sophomore forward Colin Matteson and freshman guard Jordan Hayter shot for 13 and 12 points, respectively. Barnes made only four points but delivered 11 assists, five rebounds, and four steals.

Florida Tech point guard E.J. Murray led his team with 23 points.

The Nanooks are now 7-5 in season play. The team gets about two weeks off before heading to Anchorage to face Hawaii-Hilo on Dec. 28 and BYU Hawaii on Dec. 29.
