Game Provides Fun and Learning
By Pam Carson
Most students get their fill of academe during the week; in fact, according to general complaints on campus, many get more than their fill. But some students actually look forward to a little extra on the weekend--and, believe it or not, they call if fun!
They really call it College Bowl.
College Bowl is an all-campus, intramural question-and-answer game usually played between two teams of four players each. Points are scored when team members give correct answers to questions asked by the moderator.
The questions, though often tricky, are not always academic in nature.
"It used to be totally academic," said Lisa Stone, coordinator of College Bowl on campus and program assistant at Wood Center.
"Now the core is still academic, but it's broadened its scope to include a wider variety of subjects from sports to entertainment to music.
While new to students currently enrolled at UAF, the game is not new to campus. It is making a comeback after being phased out 20 years ago.
"It's going through a trial period this year," Stone said. "We're trying to bring it back."
The varsity team, comprised of the four player team that wins the UAF tournament plus four other all-star players who compete in Intramurals, goes on to compete in the regional tournament next February in Boise, Idaho. Winning teams from the 15 regional tournaments will compete in the national tournament next spring at a location not yet decided on.
"Campus Bowl is an academic competition, which makes it unique. It's interesting, fun, exciting… I urge people to come," Stone said.
"It's entertaining, you might learn something, too!"
