Dragged up North

Wolf whistles echoed through the crowd Saturday night as people strutted their stuff in the DRAGged Up North variety show in the Wood Center Ballroom.

Drag kings and queens treated the standing-room-only crowd to a wide range of performances including comedy, belly dancing and a fashion show.

The show, sponsored by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Ally club, had more than 20 participants with names like Malcom Huge, Oliver Yearbody, and Kat Asse-Trofee.

"The club always puts on a good show," said wildlife biology major Johnny Hagood.

The costumes ranged from Army fatigues worn by Travis T and Oliver Yearbody, to a little red dress shown off by Liam Ward. A long yellow dress accented by a banana headdress worn by Lee Graham got the crowd in frenzy.

"I wonder if she'll get her banana peeled later," said Malika Noreen, who emceed the show.

Noreen, whose drag name is Ernest Cummings, said the crowd was "fantastic" and very responsive to the performers.

"[It's] not my first rodeo, nor will it be my last," she added.

Joel Keeney, whose drag name is Kat Asse-Trofee, sang and played the guitar in the show.

"It all came together very well," he said. "We weren't expecting this kind of crowd."

The group was asked about the number of people the room was allowed to hold and still be within fire code regulations, he added.

Between drag performances, Cold Fusion Tribal Dance, a local belly-dancing group, entertained the crowd.

"We were looking for more venues and were asked to perform at the show," said Mary Haley, a UAF employee and member of the five-member Middle Eastern dance group.

Also helping out with the show were members of the UAF Student Drama Association who provided sound and lighting.

The show raised nearly $800 and part of the proceeds went to help Fairbanks figure skater Michael Skulstad, who is going to the Junior Nationals in Cleveland, Ohio next month.

Theatre UAF donated some of the costumes and participants donated others.

"When you're organizing a show and can't afford to put a ton of money into it, you become master collectors of odd clothing items," said Emily Sousa, who goes by the name of Travis T.

"A lot of people came up after and asked how they could get involved," she said in a phone interview after the show.

UAF freshman Ingrid Johnson, 18, said that she attended the show because she wanted to see something "fun and different."

With this show, she definitely got what she was looking for.
