Art piece of the week

The bold lines and colors of this piece set it apart from the other paintings exhibited in the BFA showing in the gallery. The piece's massive size and the way the panels are stacked make the winged heart seem almost three-dimensional.

The artist, Aeron Henderson, is a 25-year-old Fairbanks resident who looks to tattoo art for inspiration. Her body is a testament to her favorite style; she describes herself as being "covered in tattoos."

She sees a world with clear outlines and vibrant colors and contours. All her pieces, ceramics, prints, paintings and sculptures, reflect her vision. In this painting she plays with the ideas of "sacred" and "holy." The three panel style is evocative of altarpieces created in the Medieval and Renaissance eras. Triptychs were originally designed with images of angels and saints. Henderson's heart is winged like holy seraphs and the round elements in the bottom of the design further the idea of spiritual by suggesting halos.

The heart depicted isn't the standard "I love mom heart" because the artist understands and has studied the physiology of the human body. She wanted the heart to be more realistic, plus the flat color of a heart symbol would not have had the depth and impact of the actual organ. The title, "Size Matters," refers to the capacity of the heart to understand, to heal and to help. This piece was designed to pay homage to people that have helped her to overcome in life. The wings on the heart have the symbolic meaning of freedom and lightness to Henderson. Most importantly this piece is a thank you that she is unable to express verbally.

"That's why you make art, because I can't say what this means with words. This is the only way I can say it," Henderson explained.

The painting is versatile. The panels can be taken apart and hung separately.

"She is confidant in her style but she still explores. That's a sign of a good artist," said Hanna Stevenson, 3-D design instructor, MFA, and friend of Henderson

Stevenson also admired the craft of Henderson's piece saying: "I like the way that she used not one but three canvases. I think the piece really speaks to the American genre of graphic arts, a genre that she is really familiar with, and continually explores."

Like this painting? Too bad. It sold last Friday.
