The Nanooks swept Ferris State this weekend, ending a seven game home stand.

Friday's game finished with Alaska on top 2-1. Then the Nanooks struck at Ferris State again Saturday, finishing 4-2.

Junior defenseman Brandon Gawryletz scored the first goal of Friday night in the fourth minute of the second period.

Freshman Dion Knelsen got the assist for passing Gawryletz the puck as he stepped onto the ice after spending two minutes in the box for holding.

Gawryletz goal was a mere seven seconds after his penalty ended.

Ferris tied it up in the third when defenseman Jim Jorgensen snuck one around sophomore goalie Chad Johnson, who made 29 saves.

The Nanooks took just 23 shots at the Bulldog's goal.

The Toyota Player of the game was junior winger Kyle Greentree, who scored the winning goal late in the third period when the Nanooks had a five-to-three power play opportunity.

Saturday's game was a different story.

The Nanooks dominated the first two periods, though they still trailed the Bulldogs in attempts at the end of the night, 29 to 25.

With just five minutes left in the third, Alaska fell apart.

Assistant captain Curtis Fraser was given two minutes for tripping and Greentree was sent to the box for the same less than a minute later, giving Ferris a two man advantage.

Bulldog senior defenseman Joe Van Culin scored 20 seconds later, putting Ferris on the scoreboard for the first time Sunday night.

The Nanooks were at full strength less than two minutes later when FSU winger Justin Lewandowski snuck the puck around Johnson's leg to bring the score to a tenuous 3-2 UAF lead.

Alaska rallied back, with Fraser scoring against an empty net in the last minute to end the night and herald UAF's 4-2 win.

The first three goal of the night were scored by sophomore winger Brandon Walls, captain Lucas Burnett, and defenseman Steve Vanoosten.

Burnett's goal was a tricky backhanded wraparound was his first goal of the season.

"I was just trying to do whatever I had to do to get it in the net," Burnett said.

"It's better to win ugly then to lose good, isn't it?" said coach Tavis MacMillan after Saturday's game.
