Anchorage Flight Is Still Open

Blake McKinley announced today that there are nine more seats available on the chartered flight to Anchorage over the Christmas holidays. McKinley who has personally directed the charter trip for the past several years stated that reservations may be made for the flight until November 1, space available.

The round trip fare on the flight has been set at $38.00. The charter fare is several dollars lower then the regular fare, for the trip by air. The Aircraft, a DC-4, will leave Saturday, December 22, and will depart Anchorage on the return flight, late Wednesday evening, January 2.

McKinley explained that in order to avoid confusion and possible cancellation of the flight, all those who intend to take the flight must deposit the full fare with the University Comptroller's office on or before November 15.

To reserve space on the chartered flight, interested parties may contact Blake McKinley, Room 311, Main Dorm, or Lonnie Bartholomew in Nerland Hall.

Kathy Butler: Symphony Soloist Featured

Coming from the music capital of the world, Vienna, Austria, one might feel a bit of a culture shock upon arriving in Fairbanks. But for Kathy Butler, the featured soloist of the University-Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra's performance this Sunday, the transition was one of pleasant surprise.

Butler is presently Assistant Professor if Violin, Viola and Chamber Music at UAF and obtained both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in the music form the Julliard School Of Music in New York City. In addition, Butler received her Master of Music Arts Degree from Yale University of Music and intends to return to Yale during the Christmas break to obtain a Doctorate in performance.

Having spent the last three years in Fairbanks, straight from Vienna where she was studying under a Fulbright scholarship, Bulter said she doesn't feel culturally lacking here "There's enough happening for me now," she said.

Julliard, Fulbright, and Yale are all impressive names and one might assume that a person with such a background would choose to stay in either New York or Vienna to perform. But Bulter enjoys teaching and the feeling of "being my own boss. I can teach and perform. If I were in an orchestra I'd be working under someone else."

Bulter's musical preference tends to be toward the Romantics. She attributes this focus not only to the preparation for her upcoming Yale University performance, but also preparation for the Sunday's UAF Concert-Hall performance with the University-Fairbanks Symphony.

The Oct. 25 concert marks the first of the season for the Symphony and will include the symphonic suite "Scheherezade" by Korsakov as well as "Concerto for Violin" by Mendelsshohn….
