FREE SPEECH OR HARRASSMENT?

Police received a report Aug. 29 about offensive flyers left in the warm up hut outside at the Wood Center bus stop. The flyers depicted someone in the nude, along with a phone number.

Lt. Syrilyn Tong said the flyers were obviously posted by someone other than the woman in the flyers. Tong said the unidentified woman probably did not want to solicit sex as the flyers suggested and was likely a victim, Tong said. The flyers were "on the lines of pornographic and libelous," she said.

"This was totally not free speech," Tong said.

Police searched the other bus stops but found no other flyers.

LIVELY DORMS

Police responded Aug. 26 to a disorderly person at Macintosh Hall who would not leave the residence hall office. An officer removed the person and trespassed him.

CHICK FLICKS

Police spotted a female at the Movie Gallery on University Avenue on Aug. 28 who appeared angry. Police contacted her and assisted her to residence.

TRAFFIC STOPS GALORE

Police stopped a vehicle on Thompson Drive on Sept. 1 at 3 p.m. for an equipment violation. Police found that the driver, Nicholas Hawkins, had small amounts of marijuana, and police suspected he had cocaine. UAFPD arrested Hawkins and impounded his vehicle to search it later.

Later that night, at about 10:37 p.m., police pulled-over another vehicle for equipment violations, this time on Alumni Drive. Police reported finding that all three occupants had small quantities of marijuana. A fourth person had been underage drinking, police said. Police cited and released Michael Williams, 24, Katrina Vecchiarelli, 19, and Erik Winkler, 20, for misconduct involving a controlled substance.

On Sept. 2 at 1:10 a.m., police stopped another vehicle for equipment violations on Tanana Loop. A female passenger in the car was violating curfew laws, police said. The girl was cited and released to her guardians.

DON'T STOP

Officers tried to stop a speeding vehicle Sept. 2 on Yankovich Drive. The driver sped up and turned his car's lights off to elude officers. A turn in the road caused the vehicle to lose control and crash into a stand of trees.

The driver, Richard Bair, 26, then fled on foot. Bair had a felony warrant for his arrest and allegedly had a small quantity of marijuana on him. After a short chase, police arrested Bair and took him to Fairbanks Correctional Center for evading and eluding police, driving with a suspended operator's license, and possession of a controlled substance. Police also served the warrant for his arrest. He was on probation for theft and assault, police said.

SMOKE IN YOUR EYES

While taking a routine patrol, police spotted a vehicle full of smoke in the Kuskokwim Drive dump area Sept. 2. Police found Simon Schaad, 19, of Homer and Ryan Bateman, 18, of Kodiak in the vehicle, allegedly smoking marijuana. Police cited and released the two.
