Wristbands make for a dull SAC

The mandatory wristbands that identified age and residence in the Student Apartment Complex over Springfest weekend made for a very mellow atmosphere.

The wristbands may have accomplished what Residence Life wanted, but many residents of SAC were unhappy with the results.

"It was a bummer for us seniors because this is our last Springfest, and hardly anyone was allowed up here," says Emily Altand, resident of SAC.

This year, residents of SAC were allowed to sign in two guests to bring up to SAC. Anyone found entering SAC without a wristband was turned away.

Adam Berkey, resident director of SAC, said most of the problems related to Springfest in SAC during previous years have been caused by non-UAF affiliated people.

Monster volleyball, barbecue, and live music entertained the few people around SAC Friday afternoon.

"When Junk Show played I was trying to get people to come up and dance and enjoy the show, but there really wasn't anyone around," says Don Gillie, resident of SAC.

"They had a good idea with the wristbands," he continued, "but it was poorly advertised. They needed to advertise it all over campus so that everyone knew what was going on in SAC and could try to get signed up."

"I think it was good that it wasn't jam-packed with drunk people like it usually is, but I think if, instead of allowing only guests of residents of SAC, they should allow a limit of residents of UAF up there, like 500 people, and it'd be a little better," suggested Brian McNulty, another SAC resident.

Many others felt the same way.

Gwendolyn Luther, resident of SAC and graduating senior, missed the exciting atmosphere of previous years.

"It was really deserted this year, but it was a good idea, and this was a trial year, so hopefully in years to come they'll tweak it so that it's a little more fun," she said.
