April 17 - Women's basketball signs first recruit

Caitlyn Rohrbach, a 6-foot-0 forward from Edmonds, WA, has signed a national letter of intent to play for the Nanooks. Rohrbach will begin the fall 2006 semester with four years of NCAA eligibility remaining. "I had the opportunity to watch them practice and enjoyed the team and the coaches when I came on my trip," said Rohrbach, who visited UAF in November. "The University also had the majors that I was interested in, and all of these things helped me make my decision to sign."

"Caitlyn's experience and skill at the post position will make her a versatile threat," said coach Lynne Andrew. "She is a very well-rounded player and she has the potential to come in and make an immediate impact in our lineup." Rohrbach was named the Seattle Post-Intelligencer All-Area Most Inspirational and True Blue award winner for the 2005-2006 season, for her efforts at Meadowvale High School.

April 18 - Men's skiing signs Henri Soom

The UAF Men's Ski team has signed its third recruit for the 2006-2007 season. Henri Soom, from Tartu, Estonia, has signed a national letter of intent to ski for UAF. Representing his native Estonia at the 2006 World Junior Ski Championships, Soom finished 32nd in a field of 81 competitors, besting all four Americans in the sprint event.

"Henri adds another layer of depth to our men's roster," said coach Scott Jerome. "A top junior sprinter in Estonia, Henri has the speed we are looking for in our skiers. Though I have only seen Henri ski on video, I can tell that his technical skills are solid. He has a very Scandinavian style of skiing, smooth movements with a lot of glide. We are very excited to have Henri ski for the Nanooks next winter." Soom joins fellow Estonian Vahur Teppan on the UAF squad.

April 18 - Women's cross-country signs Beth Zirbes

The women's cross-country running squad has signed their third recruit for the 2006-2007 season. Beth Zirbes, from Silver Lake, MN, will enroll as a graduate student with two years of NCAA eligibility remaining. Zirbes was named as 2004 Minnesota Triathlon Junior of the Year.

"Beth Zirbes brings toughness to Nanook cross-country," said coach Scott Jerome. "She was a top amateur tri-athlete in Minnesota which requires a great deal of tenacity and discipline. After swimming for 12 minutes and biking for 40 more, Beth can knock off a 21-minute, five-kilometer running race. Based on these types of performances I know that she will add depth to our roster. She has given up the bike and the pool and will now focus her training solely on running."

April 20 - Swimming signs two recruits

The swimming team has signed its third and fourth recruits for the 2006-2007 season.

Kathryn Niemi and Kelly Becker have signed national letters of intent to swim for UAF, and will each enroll as freshmen with four years of eligibility apiece. Niemi, of Mukilteo, WA, is a senior at Kamiak High School.

"Kathryn has been swimming for 11 years," said Lemley, "starting as a six-year-old under [Chris Erikson], who is an old friend of mine," said coach Scott Lemley. "He describes her as a 'very talented swimmer who's a late maturer.' That's ideal for us because it indicates her best years are still ahead of her."

Niemi plans to study anthropology, and hopes to eventually earn a master's degree in anthropology or biology.

Becker, of Tualatin, OR, is a distance swimmer at Tualatin High School, where her coach is Andy Carlisle, father of current UAF swimmer Hilary Carlisle.

"Kelly represents a big piece of next year's puzzle for us in two respects," said Lemley. "First, she's going to play a major role in our move back to being a presence on the national scene. It's reasonable to assume with a year of training at the college level she'll qualify for the NCAA Division II Nationals in at least one of those events. Second, our top distance swimmer, Sam Zinsli, will now have a training partner. Sam has basically swum against the clock for the last year. With Kelly signing, Sam will have a teammate on next year's team who is faster then she is. This will give Sam the motivation to train at a very high level this summer so she can start the season as Kelly's equal."

Becker has not yet decided upon a program of study.

April 20 - Men's basketball signs Keven Campbell

Keven Campbell, a 6-foot-0 point guard from Stockton, CA, has signed a national letter of intent to play for the UAF Nanooks.

Campbell will begin at UAF in the Fall 2006 semester, with four years of NCAA eligibility remaining.

"We couldn't be more thrilled to have Keven as a part of our basketball family," said coach Frank Ostanik. "He is a true point guard who has the rare combination of size, skill and toughness. He was the No. 1 point guard we wanted all year."

Campbell was a standout player for Edison High School, where he averaged 17.6 points per game, and was a three-time Most Valuable Player.

"I am a big believer in the importance of being able to win the point guard spot every night you step on the floor," said Ostanik. "With Keven's size and toughness, we feel we can do that. When I look at the lineage of point guards we've had, from Devin Dawkins to Chris Smith, Keven will fit in perfectly."

April 22 - Women's basketball signs second recruit

Brittany Black, a 5-foot-11 forward from Coupeville, WA, and younger sister of current Nanook Lexie Black, has signed a national letter of intent to play for the UAF Nanooks.

Black will begin at UAF in the fall 2006 semester, with four years of NCAA eligibility remaining. Black, team captain at Coupeville High School, led her team in scoring, and was named the team's Most Inspirational Player.

Black is a member of the National Honor Society, and intends to study biology here at UAF.

April 22 - Nanooks ranked by NHL scouting

Two UAF hockey players have been ranked in the NHL Entry Draft by the National Hockey League's Central Scouting Service for next season.

Chad Johnson, who completed his freshman season as a goaltender for UAF, was ranked 21st among North American goaltenders, and Jeff Lee, brother of current UAF sophomore Aaron Lee and a recruit for next year's UAF squad, was ranked 128th among North American skaters.
