April 13 - Runner Rhoda Kamarey signed
UAF running coach Scott Jerome announced the name of UAF's newest recruit for the Fall 2006 season. Rhoda Kamarey, from Mosoriot, Kenya, will attempt to fill the shoes left empty by the departure of senior Pavla Havlova.
"Though I have not seen her run in person, Rhoda's times from the track suggest that she could be as good or better than Pavla Havlova," said Jerome.
Rhoda is the second Kenyan recruit for next year's Nanook squad, joining Emily Cheptoo, of Eldoret, Kenya.
April 13 - Volleyball signs third recruit
The UAF Volleyball team signed its third recruit for the 2006-2007 season, as Jessica Hill signed a national letter of intent to play for the Nanooks. Hill, a 6-foot-0 left-hander, will enter UAF's program as a freshman, with four years of NCAA eligibility remaining.
"We are really excited that Jess has decided to make UAF her college home," said coach Phil Shoemaker. "She is a well-trained and talented athlete, who we think has the ability to make a significant impact immediately, and yet has a great deal of room to improve over her college career."
Hill plans to study biological sciences, and Shoemaker commented that the high quality of UAF's biology program was one of her deciding factors.
April 14 - Beyerle aims at World Shooting Championships
UAF's own Jamie Beyerle was selected to represent Team USA at the 49th International Shooting Sport Federation World Shooting Championships, July 21 to August 5.
More than 2,000 athletes from around the world will make the trip to Zagreb, Croatia to compete for the quadrennial title of World Champion.
Beyerle was selected because of her victories in the Women's Smallbore Three-Position and Women's Prone events at the USA Shooting Spring Selection Match, in Fort Benning, GA.
Also representing UAF at the tryouts are Matt Rawlings and Matt Emmons. Christian Lejon will also be present, but he is attempting to qualify for the Swedish national team.
April 15 - New skiing recruits
Ski coach Scott Jerome announced the names of UAF skiing's two newest recruits. Vahur Teppan and Ray Sabo have signed national letters of intent to ski for UAF.
Teppan will begin in the fall as a junior with two years of eligibility under NCAA rules, while Sabo will begin as a freshman.
Teppan, hailing from Tartu, Estonia, recently finished 16th in the Estonian National Championships.
"We are excited to have signed a skier of Vahur's level and experience," Jerome said. "I have seen video of Vahur on snow and roller-skis, and he is very smooth. He obviously has very good technique. His World Cup and Scandinavian Cup experiences will be invaluable to our team. Vahur will certainly add depth to our men's squad and help us challenge our toughest rivals."
Sabo isn't traveling nearly as far. From Whitehorse, Canada, Sabo competed strongly at the 2006 Canadian National Ski Championships, finishing 6th in the free technique sprint, 8th in the 7.5km free technique, 10th in the 10km classical, and 17th in the 15km classical.
"Ray Sabo is another solid addition to our men's squad. He will only be 18 years old next winter which means he has a lot of room for development in his time at UAF," said Jerome. "His sprint results from 2006 show that he has speed. This is one of the things I look for in a young recruit. Can he ski fast for 1,000 meters? If so, he has a chance of skiing fast for 10 kilometers."
Teppan and Sabo are the first recruits for the ski team's 2006-2007 season.
