As warm weather melts the ground, all kinds of things are popping up. Lost key chains, dog toys, and just about everything else buried in the snow is reemerging.
That includes pieces of litter like cigarette butts, fast food wrappers, beer bottles, and soda cans. Walking around the UAF campus, you can see all these things, and I for one am sick of living in this filth.
Fortunately, Fairbanks holds a cleanup day each May, just in time for a beautiful spring and summer. The official Clean Up Day is coming up soon, but I propose we do something about the garbage now.
If you notice this abundance of litter in your travels through campus, please, feel free to grab a piece of trash or two and throw it in a waste bin. Beautifying UAF doesn't have to happen on a particular day, we can keep it clean all the time.
That also means not littering in the first place. UAF provides plenty of trashcans on campus for throwing away garbage. There are also many better places to drop cigarette butts, my least favorite, than on the sidewalk.
The UAF Leadership Program has secured over 1,400 plastic bags, donated by British Petroleum for the cleanup effort, and those should be available soon. Still, we can improve our campus, and our own appreciation of it, by grabbing a piece of garbage here or there.
