So many artists look to the local forests for inspiration and see only natural perfection and beauty. Fox wanted those experiencing his art to notice the other side of nature…the spooky side. "A Bad Night on Little Chena" is part of a fourpiece instillation, each panel is bigger and more assailing then the last. The pieces combine to create a sense of being surrounded by trees and alone in a forest that seems graspingly menacing.
There is some hope in the wilderness. One branch on this tree resembles Michelangelo's "Creation of Adam." Fox could have been suggesting something deeper about humanity, that though we may feel scared, we're never really without the presence of God.
He says he never consciously looks for inspiration but instead describes his art as what "pops out of his head."
