Boxing, Skiing, Chess, Pinochle added to intramural sports

Members of the I.A.C. last week agreed that boxing, skiing, chess and pinochle should be considered for integration into the present intramural program. They are currently canvassing their team units to ascertain how much interest there is in these sports. Students who would like to see any of these or any other sport held should let their representative know right away or else attend one of the I.A.C. meetings, which are held every Wednesday noon in the dining room of the cafeteria. Student expression is essential as the I.A.C. is endeavoring to put on the kind of program that most of the students want.

Presently two intramural activities are under way: the First Annual Bell Basketball Tournament, which Main Dorm is sponsoring, and for which they are offering their now fabulous bell as a rotating trophy. There's also the men's doubles double-elimination pingpong tournament. The brackets for this tournament are posted in the recreation room of the Student Union Building and on the athletic bulletin board in the basement of Eielson Building.

Surf's up tonight at Wood Center Party
by Jamie Bryson

Clad in your swimsuit, you are reposing on the sand. The skies are clear, the temperature is a balmy 77 degrees, soft music is playing, beachgoers are frolicking nearby and the water is rippling invitingly.

Where are you, Hawaii? Dreaming?

Actually, you are at Wood Center, tonight, for the first Wood Center Beach Party in February.

Twelve tons of sand will be hauled in for the event and spread on the lower level of the multi-level lounge. A water-filled life raft will provide a "lake."

There will be bathing suit and muscle beach contests, arm wrestling, leg wrestling, Frisbee throwing, a Hoola Hoop competition, junk food and movies.

The party, beginning at 9 p.m. and running to 12:30 or 1 a.m., is the brainchild of Karl Kassel, Wood Center program coordinator.

"We think that mid-winter is just the right time for a beach party in Fairbanks," said Kassel.

Kassel said the Wood Center joined with the university's physical plant to buy a dump truck load of sand, which will be hauled into the building one wheelbarrow load at a time to form the beach.wThe university will use the sand in the spring for repair jobs.

The beach will be moved both ways by the women of Wickersham Hall, who are doing it for money for their activity fund said Debbie Seward, Wickersham resident advisor. She said a work party of 20 to 30 women "and any they can get to help" will begin hauling the sand into the Wood Center about 5 O'clock this afternoon. They haul the sand out again tomorrow.

A junk food stand will offer Coney Island hotdogs, ice cream and soda pop. A fire will be going in the fireplace to roast marshmallows.

Two beach party movies, "Beach Party" and "How to Stuff a Wild Bikini" will begin at 9 p.m.

"We guarantee nice weather," Kassel said. "Bring your own lawn chair."
