Feb. 13 – Chad Johnson named Rookie of the Week Goaltender Chad Johnson was named this week's Rookie of the Week by the CCHA after a pair of one-goal games against the Bowling Green Falcons last weekend. Johnson allowed just two goals in two games while blocking 68 of 70 shots, for a .971 save percent. The stellar performance moved him to 15th nationwide on save percentage, with .923 overall. He is also the 3rd ranked rookie goalie. Feb. 13 – Rifle finishes perfect season The rifle team finished its season undefeated last weekend, beating the University of Texas El Paso 4,697-4,582, and breaking six national records in the process. The team is 12-0 for the season. Matt Rawlings broke the individual collegiate smallbore and civilian smallbore records, and Jamie Beyerle broke the women's smallbore record. UAF's team score broke the civilian, collegiate and open records. Feb. 16 – Men's b-ball drops fourth in a row The men's basketball team lost its fourth consecutive match in a 71-64 loss to the Humboldt State Lumberjacks in Arcata, CA. The Nanooks' record is now 14-9 overall and 7-7 in GNAC play, while HSU improved to 14-7 overall and 8-5 in the GNAC. UAF was led by Chris Jordan, who turned in 27 points, including both of the team's three-pointers. After trailing 39-26 at the half, the Nanooks launched a comeback, taking a one-point lead with just 4:25 to play. They failed to hold on, however, and the Lumberjacks outscored UAF 12-4 in the last four minutes to secure the victory. Feb. 17 – Women's b-ball ends losing streak The women's basketball team snapped a nine-game losing streak with a 77-66 victory over the Saint Martins' Saints, in Lacey, WA. The win improves UAF to 6-15 overall and 3-10 in the GNAC conference, good for an eighth place tie with Alaska Anchorage. The Nanooks were led in scoring by Kari Reabold with 18 points, Cristina Bruketta with 16, and Sheena Brown, who added 15 more. UAF also got double-digit scoring from Jen Wasson. The Saints got 21 points from Beth Layton, but it wasn't enough to stop UAF's offense. The Nanooks jumped out to a 14-6 lead, and never trailed in the game. Feb. 18 – Men's b-ball ends losing streak The men's basketball team ended its four-game losing streak after triumphing over the Western Oregon Wolves 82-76 in Monmouth, OR. The Nanooks' record improves to 15-9 overall and 8-7 in the GNAC. The Nanooks were led in scoring by Kenny Barker with 31 points, including four of four three-point attempts. Andrew Smith added 18 points, including six free throws, and Chris Jordan and Auston Autry also had double-digit scoring for the ‘Nooks. The Wolves got a game-high 32 points from J.T. Mitchell, including 14 field goals, but the rest of WOU's squad was held to low scores. Smith is UAF's all-time leading shot blocker, recording his 100th career block at the end of the first half. The Nanooks overcame problems with free throw accuracy, scoring 17 of 23 attempts from the line, good for 74 percent. The scoring was back and forth early in the first half, but the Nanooks gathered a one-point lead with 3:36 to go and scored nine unanswered points to remain in the lead for the remainder of the game. The Wolves closed to within three points with 3:39 remaining in the game, but UAF was able to shut them down with an 8-2 scoring run. Feb. 18 – women's b-ball loses to Seattle The women's basketball team lost to the Redhawks of Seattle University 55-49 in Seattle, WA. The Nanooks' record drops to 6-16 overall and 3-11 in GNAC play. They were led in scoring by Karen Rabung with 12 points, Cristina Bruketta with 11, and Jen Wasson with eight. Wasson and Kari Reabold led both teams with eight rebounds apiece. The ‘Hawks got 23 points from Ashley Brown, but no one else in the low-scoring match scored in double digits. The ‘Nooks led after the first half 17-15 and maintained a nine-point advantage with 12:22 remaining in the game, but SU scored eight unanswered points, and went on a 22-8 scoring run to take a lead. Two free throws by Wasson gave UAF a 49-49 tie with 1:43 remaining, but three missed three-pointers and two missed field goals in the last 90 seconds cost the ‘Nooks the game. |
