Lucas Burnett, a 6-foot-3, 240-pound Junior from Rossland, British Columbia, is one of the UAF hockey team's three co-captains and one of the busiest guys on campus. In addition to playing Division I hockey, Burnett, along with the rest of the team, is a full-time student. "You have to be pretty much an expert at time management," said Burnett, whose schedule keeps him moving all day. For example, on Fridays when the Nanooks have a home series, Burnett has two hours of class, three hours of hockey practice, as many as three half-hour team meetings, and the game itself, which can absorb as much as six hours of a day. "I try to get to the Carlson Center a little before 5 p.m.," said Burnett, "and I usually don't get home until 10:30 or 11 p.m." Between classes, the games themselves, and the other public functions put on by the team, there is really not many hours left in the week. And you've still got to do you're homework," Burnett said. "I love it here, it's awesome," said Burnett of living in a hockey town. "We're the show here, and the fans are great. I love coming out onto the ice, under the big bear— it's a great atmosphere, you can't not get excited." He feels the same about the Carlson Center. "I really associate it with home now. It's easy to get used to it. It gets really loud in there, and because it's so loud, you can feed off the energy of the crowd. There's a lot of spirit there." "He is a great ambassador for this school and this program," said coach Tavis MacMillian. "I'm very proud of him, not just as his coach, but as an alumni of this school. He's a really good guy, one you can always count on," said Curtis Fraser, another team co-captain. "He's built like a truck." After college, Burnett has dreams of playing pro hockey. "I love the game. It's brought me here. It would be nice to keep playing hockey, to see how far it can take me." Those dreams are not too wild, either. Burnett is currently the fourth leading scorer on the Nanook hockey team, and he spends less time in the penalty box than some of his teammates, a solid player with great consistency on the ice. "I know what I'm going to get every time he steps out on the ice I'm going to get this absolutely horse of a man who's just physical almost to the point of being freaky," MacMillian said. "He can go and go and go. You know the Energizer Bunny? He's the Energizer Bear." "You've got to have high expectations of yourself to do this," Burnett said. "You've got to always want to improve." |
