50 Years Ago (or Thereabout)
Ski Team Goes To Anchorage University of Alaska Ski Team members left this morning (Feb. 23) for Anchorage and the Arctic Valley Ski Bowl. Nat Butcher, Jack Gould, and Pat Turner, sponsored by the ASUA, will enter the Fur Rendezvous ski tournament. By press time it was not known if Larry Irving would also go to Anchorage. It is expected that other Ski Team members will travel to Anchorage at their own expense. Dr. E. Richardson, ski coach, stated that some skiers were detained by their G.P.A. He will also accompany the team. Up to last week end the team had planned to send their four members to the Northwest Intercollegiate Ski Championships in Washington; however, after a letter from the Ski Club to the Joint Athletic Council stating that many club members felt that it would be more advantageous to go to Alaskan tournaments, it was decided to send skiers to Anchorage and Juneau. More members can go to the Alaskan meets, it is desired to strengthen relations with Southeastern Alaska, and the study break will be shorter if the team stays in Alaska. Dr. Richardson stated that finances and team strength were not decisive problems, since only four men would have been sent to the states, and it will cost $150 more to attend the Alaskan meets. 25 years ago:
Sun Spots: A Poll of Campus Opinion What classes do you enjoy most? Lina Kiani, 18, majoring in medicine. American Government is my best class. The teacher is good. We have a lot of class discussions. U.S. History I enjoy the most; lots of discussions and the teacher can really get her point across well. Joe Saenz, 24, majoring in natural resources. Wildlife 417; it has information on what I do – I'm a trail guide. The class explains relationships between wildlife and the land, and how they interact in the Artic. I can use the information; it helps me explain things better to the people I guide. Steven Pannone, 20, majoring in civil engineering. Secrets of skin sewing is my favorite class. We learn to make baby booties and hats and stuff like that. I'm working on my trapper hat right now. I'm learning how to use fur, and it'll come in handy in life. Brian Dunn, 21, majoring in political science. I have a Congress and Public Policy class with a good teacher who gives interesting lectures with lots of class discussion. Also, it's a night class with long breaks. Karen Hilliard, 18, majoring in physical education. All my P.E.classes are excellent learning classes. I enjoy helping people and teaching them the experience and knowledge that I have. I also especially like my chemistry class – it is really challenging. The professor wrote his own book and it's like reading a spy novel and finding out the clues. |
