Jones puts off tobacco decision

Chancellor Jones said that he plans to put off, for now, making a decision on tobacco sales at the Wood Center. Jones said he received resolutions from Staff Council, Faculty Senate, and ASUAF that made it very clear they did not want tobacco sales banned on campus. Last semester, Jones announced that he was considering banning the sales of tobacco at the Wood Center because he felt the sale of the unhealthy products sent the wrong message, especially since the university has instated a wellness program for the faculty and staff. He sought some feedback and was surprised by "the emotion and passion evoked" by the consideration of this decision. Though Jones still feels that selling tobacco on campus sends the wrong message, he has decided to heed the requests of the opposition he received.

"If I had it to do over again," Jones said, "I would have done away with the tobacco quietly in the summer, but at this point it would be disingenuous of me to do so considering the response."

Jones says the stakes are too low to make a decision that would cause such uproar. Still, Jones feels that after the statewide university system spent $3 million on a wellness plan, it strikes a discord to sell unhealthy carcinogens. "It is not that I want to avoid controversy," Jones said, "it is that it isn't worth the controversy it would cause."

Jones admitted that he was a little disappointed in the feedback he received from the student government, "I wanted some thoughtful feedback, and got back the results of a poll."
