Dec. 5 -Bruketta Player of the Week

Freshman Cristina Bruketta of the women's basketball team was honored as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference player of the week. The 5-foot-8 guard from Ellensburg, Washington has led the Nanooks in scoring in each of the last four games, contributing nearly one-third of the team's points. "One of the things we recruited Cristina for was her perimeter shot," said coach Lynne Andrew. "She's definitely stepped up and made the transition from high school to college in that respect. She's not afraid to shoot and she's got that scorer mentality."

Dec. 6 - Men's basketball signs first recruit

Martez Christian, 6-foot-5 forward from Las Vegas has signed a national letter of intent to play for the Nanooks, becoming the first member of the 2005-2006 recruiting class. "We believe Martez will be a very good player for us. He is going to need time to physically mature, but his potential is limitless," said coach Frank Ostanik. "More than his ability, we were impressed by his demeanor and personality. He comes from a tremendous family and personifies the character and toughness we look for in a young man."

Dec. 9 -Skiing 5 of 7 for cancelled meets

The UAF ski team's dual meet against the UAA Seawolves in Anchorage was postponed indefinitely due to warm temperatures and a lack of snow. A near-record high temperature of 44 degrees, coupled with widespread rainfall resulted in further postponement of the events, originally scheduled for Nov. 12-13.

December 9 -Men's basketball falls to BYU-Hawaii

The men's basketball team was defeated by the Brigham Young Seasiders in the first game of the Glacier Classic Tournament, falling 76-59 and breaking a four-game winning streak. The Nanooks took a 32-28 lead into the locker room at halftime, but BYU-H went on a 16-0 scoring run, giving themselves a 46-38 lead. The Nanooks battled back to within one point, but the Seasiders went on a 20-8 run.

The Nanooks were led strongly by Jonathan Osbourne with 14 points and Andrew Smith, with 11. UAF's percentages were low across the board, averaging 32 percent of field goals, 18 percent of three-pointers, and 63 percent of free throws, compared to 55 percent, 55 percent, and 88 percent respectively for the Seasiders.

Later that night, a UAF basketball player threw a ball into the air, accidentally hitting a sprinkler in the Patty Center gym. This caused the sprinklers to soak the entire gym, also fouling up an important water pump. Apparently the pump was unable to entirely fill the Patty Center pool for the next day's swim practice.

Dec. 10 -Men's Basketball defeats CSU-Stanislaus

The Nanooks came back from their loss to BYU-Hawaii and defeated the Warriors of California State Stanislaus 90-82 in the final game of the Glacier Classic Tournament. The Warriors opened the game with a three-pointer after just seven seconds, and both teams played solidly through the first half. UAF led by as many as six points on one occasion, before falling behind by seven. A 7-2 run for the Nanooks at the end of the first half entered halftime with UAF trailing 36-38.

In the second half an 11-0 scoring run gave UAF a 69-68 lead. The Warriors tied the game several times, but were never able to secure a lead over UAF. The Nanooks finally took control of the game at the end, going on a 13-5 run to put the Warriors away. The Nanooks were led by Chris Jordan with 28 points and Andrew Smith contributed 23 more. Dominique Pennix led both teams in scoring, with 33 points for the Warriors. UAF's three-point percentage was a low 19 percent, but the Nanooks shot 52 percent on field goals.

Dec. 10 -Jordan makes All-Tournament Team

Chris Jordan's 28 point performance in the last game of the Glacier Classic led to his being named to the All-Tournament Team along with Dominique Pennix of CSU-S, Paul Peterson and Austin Smylie of BYU-H, and Kemmy Burgess of UAA.

UAF's next matches are in Arcata, California for the Lawrence R. DeBeni Classic hosted by Humboldt State University. The Nanooks will be playing No. 2 Tarleton State Dec. 17 and Chico State Dec. 18.
