The No. 14-ranked Nanooks hockey team split a road series against the Mavericks of Nebraska-Omaha this past weekend. The Nanooks fell on Friday, 2-4, but triumphed on Saturday 4-3.
The UAF Swim team broke eight school records at the 2005 Speedo Cup in Long Beach, California, this past weekend. All five of Thursday's events saw new records set. In the 500-yard freestyle, Samantha Zinsli broke her own record with a time of 5:25.09, and in the 50-yard freestyle, she set another record of 26.14 seconds. Joann Kump broke the 200-yard individual medley record with a time of 2:29.93. This was the only team record not yet been broken by the Nanooks this season. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Charlotte DeBruler, Danielle Rawlins, Karin Wagner set a record of 1:46.80; and finally, the 400-yard medley relay team of Amanda Hartman, Kump, Kilary Carlisle, and Zinsli set a record of 4:25.67. On Friday, Zinsli struck again, breaking the record in the 200-yard freestyle, while part of the 800-yard freestyle relay team of Megan Humphrey, Hartman, and Wagner. The relay team's finish in 8:49.50 was also good for a record. Kump also set another record, finishing the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:15.18. UAF finished Friday's events in 18th place in the tournament, with 60 points. The 20 schools at the event are mixed from both Division I and Division II. The Speedo Cup finished Saturday, however, results from those events were not available as of press time. Shooters on a streak The UAF rifle team continued its unbeaten season with a 4,706 to 4,638 victory over Ole Miss on Saturday. The Nanooks were led by All-Americans Jamie Beyerle and Matt Rawlings, with first and second place scores of 591 and 586, respectively, in the small-bore competition. The Nanooks also dominated air rifle, with Mattias Dierolf finishing first with a score of 596. Rawlings was second with 592. The Nanook rifle team continues their season with a road match at Murray State in Kentucky. Lady hoopsters in Cali The UAF Women's Basketball team lost their third straight game this Saturday, falling 96-68 to Chico State University in the final game of the Enloe Classis Tournament. The Nanooks were led by Kari Reabold and Cristina Bruketta, with 15 points each, and outscored Chico State 45-44 in the second half but were unable to secure a lead. The Nanooks next game is another road match, on Nov. 30, against the Tritons of the University of California at San Diego. Havlova named All-American UAF's star cross-country runner, Pavla Havlova, was honored as an All-American this weekend, at the NCAA Division II Championships in Prado Park, California. Havlova finished the 6 km race in 22:13.3, good enough for 22nd out of a field of 186. "I'm just so happy for her and the way she competed today. She didn't panic early in the race and just continued to motor her way up through the field," said coach Scott Jerome. "She went from first-alternate to All-American; it's just an awesome day." Havlova is now only the second Nanook to compete in the championship tournament. |
