Last Week UAF celebrated International Education Week with a variety of events and presentations. Included in the lineup were the Margaret Mead Film Festival, a flag dedication ceremony, an international food banquet, presentations on Turkey and Azerbaijan, and an international beer and wine tasting at the Pub. The flag ceremony is a yearly event in which flags from the countries of origin of international students at UAF are added to the collection on display in the wood center. The ceremony this year was held last Friday in the Wood center, and was attended by about 200 people. Peruvian grad student Viktor Tenorio, who spoke at the event, said that part of studying abroad is "learning to reach each other's hearts." "We're trying to understand ourselves as a collective that began when we first said goodbye to our families and friends at home," Tenorio said. The international student organization is called INTERSEC, and it is open to all UAF students. INTERSEC hosts social events and has a weekly free foreign film night in Schaible on Wednesdays. |
