Redo glass recyclingPlease do a follow up story on the Mayor's glass recycling plan. Glass is piling up in kitchens and garages all over Fairbanks. Keeping pressure on the mayor is the best way to bring glass recycling back. Matthew Sill UAF senior fsmds@uaf.edu To contact borough mayor Jim Whitaker, call 459-1300 or e-mail mayor@co.fairbanks.ak.us –Ed. Sparks is a Fairbanks boyDr. Charles ("Charlie") Sparks grew up in Fairbanks. He attended Denali Elementary and Main Junior High. Charlie graduated from Lathrop High School (class of 1977), and subsequently attended UAF (where he was elected head of the ASB). He then went on to earn a Ph.D. in Accounting at the University of Iowa. Charlie always wanted to give back to Alaska and Fairbanks, so he turned down offers of larger salaries at more prestigious institutions so that he could return to UAF to teach and research. Charlie's advocacy for excellence in the accounting program at UAF has resulted in a punitive reassignment from UAF to the Dillingham campus with instructions from the administration not to return. UAF has the ability to resolve this problem quickly, and at a minimal additional cost to Dr. Sparks or UAF. Hopefully, UAF will choose to do the right thing and return Dr. Sparks to his UAF teaching duties immediately. Robert Sparks sparkslawoffice@yahoo.com Editor's note: Robert Sparks is Charlie Sparks's brother. Replace a bulbThis is a photo of Maxwell, who's really into energy efficiency and conservation. He's urging people to replace energy-wasting incandescents with long-life, energy efficient compact fluorescents. The EPA is urging American families to replace one (as in one) conventional bulb with an energy-efficient bulb. "Why just one?" Max wonders. Am sending this in hopes you can share it with your readers. Max would be stoked if he saw his mug shot in the Sun Star. (There's also an extra incentive involved… an extra dog biscuit for every energy efficient bulb purchased). Thanks! John Lyle UAF Alum |
