'Nooks split first round of Governor's Cup

The Nanook hockey team, pulled off a one-goal win in the first game of the Governor's Cup series Saturday night, but lost to the Seawolves Sunday.

In Saturday's game, the Nanooks took the lead at 7:37 in the first period on a power play. Aaron Lee took assists from Ryan McLeod and Curtis Fraser to give UAF a 1-0 lead. After the goal, the mass of Fairbanks fans in attendance made the Sullivan Arena seem like a home game at the Carlson Center. The Nanooks maintained the close lead over the Seawolves through intense competition from both teams.

In the second period, UAF's Nathan Fornataro added some insurance to UAF's score when he capitalized on a power-play opportunity from Kyle Greentree at 8:21. Again, UAF fans outdid their opponents in noise making. UAF held Anchorage scoreless through the remainder of the second period, even as UAA out shot the Nanooks 10-8 in the period.

In the final frame, the Seawolves took charge, narrowing the score with a goal at 3:49 by Justin Bourne. Charlie Kronschnable and Shane Lovdahl assisted on the even-strength play. UAA pulled goalie John DeCaro with 1:37 remaining in the game, but UAF's Wylie Rogers weathered the barrage of shots, keeping Anchorage to the single goal. "It felt really good to get the win," said Fornataro, "and hopefully we can do it again tomorrow."

"I'd be surprised, Checker, (KSUA radio host Bruce Cech) if any of these games against Anchorage were more than one-goal games," said UAF head coach Tavis MacMillian between the two games.

On Sunday afternoon, the Nanooks played strongly throughout the first period, out shooting the Seawolves 13-5, but both teams were scoreless.

In the second period of play, the Nanooks took the lead with a goal by Curtis Fraser at 1:03. Jason Grinevitch made a long pass to Fraser from behind the first blue line, getting credit for the assist. Fraser was able to breakaway and caught the Seawolves on a line change, giving UAF a 1-0 lead. Just a few minutes later, UAA tied the score as Merit Waldrop took a power-play rebound from Shea Hamilton, putting it past Rogers at 5:42.

Later in the period, UAF seemed to get a break as UAA took their second 5-minute major penalty and game misconduct of the series, on Hamilton for checking from behind. With only 12 seconds left in the power play, UAA took another penalty, giving the Nanooks a nearly seven-minute power play. Unfortunately, UAF were unable to capitalize even while out shooting UAA 27-13.

In the third period, UAA was able to take their first lead of the series when Mark Smith took an early pass from Kronschnable and Bourne and got it past Rogers, seconds after a face-off.

UAF played strong through the end of the game, but was unable to even the score. The goalie was pulled with just over a minute remaining, but DeCaro and the Seawolves were able to keep the Nanooks from scoring, winning the game 2-1 and evening the Governor's Cup series at 1-1. UAA had changed the pace of the game, out shooting the Nanooks 17 to 9 in the period. UAF went 0 for 6 on the power play in the second game, while the Seawolves went 1 for 3.

The Nanooks next hockey games are this weekend, Oct. 28 and 29, against the Wolverines of the University of Michigan. The final two games of the Governor's Cup series will be played at the end of the year, Dec. 30 and 31. For more information about UAF Hockey or other athletics, go to www.gonanooks.com/
