A twelve-step for getting started at UAF

1. Advising

Academic Advising is done by appointment. If you've already declared a major, please contact your department. Undeclared students need to contact the Advising Center on the fifth floor of the Gruening Building. If you have requested a Rural Student Services advisor, go to RSS in the Brooks Building for advising. Get advised early to get the classes you want.

2. Housing and meals

- Return residence hall application/agreement form to Residence Life.

- Return dining services application/agreement form to Dining Services.

- Return health inventory and record of required immunization form to the Center for Health and Counseling.

3. Student ID card

Bring a picture ID to the Polar Express office in 203 Eielson to get your new Polar Express card. This is your ID, your meal card, your library card and copy card all in one! You must be registered for your classes to obtain a Polar Express card.

4. Fee payment

Fee payment is until September 7, 2005 for the fall semester. Fee payment is in 116 Eielson; all your fees except textbooks will be paid at this time.

5. Financial aid

If you have secured financial aid, you can stop by the Financial Aid office, 101 Eielson, or check UAOnline (uaonline.alaska.edu) to find out if your check has arrived. Checks are picked up in 116 Eielson during fee payment. Funds not used to pay fees are distributed to you by the Business Office after fee payment.

6. Parking decal

If you are going to have a car on campus, bring your vehicle registration to 111 Eielson after you pay fees so you can purchase a parking decal.

7. Textbooks

As soon as your class schedule is confirmed, you can buy textbooks at the bookstore in Constitution Hall. Book lists are available there, at the Wood Center Information Desk, RSS and the TVC Downtown Center. You can also find a book list and purchase books online.

8. UAF post office

If you're living on campus, you are eligible for a post office box at the campus post office. Complete a mailbox registration form, and then stop by the post office in Constitution Hall to get your box and key.

9. E-mail account

UAF uses e-mail to communicate with students with respect to many important matters. The university automatically assigns you an official e-mail account when you enroll. You are responsible for knowing, and when appropriate, acting on the contents of all university communications sent to your official UAF e-mail account. Go to Web LookUp (https://ssl.uaf.edu:1917/) to get your user name and set your account password.

10. Attend classes

It's important to attend all your classes on their first day. Some departments have a policy of dropping students who do not attend the first class meeting. Classes begin September 1, 2005 for fall semester. Be sure to double check our campus map (www.uaf.edu/campusmap/) and find your class locations before Thursday!

11. Need a job?

Check out the job listings at Career Services on 5th floor Gruening, Rural Student Services, or by the Student Activities office in Wood Center.

12. Have FUN!

This is college - make time to have fun
