A message from the ASUAF President

Welcome Nanooks to another great year in the Golden Heart City. My name is Joseph Blanchard and I am your ASUAF President. Along my side there is Vice President Dani Carlson and a growing number of directors and senators. Your student government is revving up for some awesome programs, campaigns and events, and we are going to need the help of motivated and responsible leaders across campus to carry the torch of the student voice and meet students' needs.

This summer has been really busy at ASUAF; our offices were just re-carpeted and I have spent many weeks trying to put things back where they go. Some sad news came when we had to shut down glass recycling, but new talks with the borough may develop a comprehensive recycling plan by December. Also the Board of Regents met in June and the debate on the senior tuition waivers began very quietly and will rage on into September.

Our returning Directors are Chris Held for recycling and Devin Boyer for Information Services, two very valuable assets last year for ASUAF. The updated website everyone has been asking about will be possible with Devin’s expertise and guidance. The director positions that need to be filled are Government Relations and Assistant, Recycling Assistant, Graphics and Website, Ombudsman and TVC Relations. Please apply as soon as possible if you are interested.

A great feature of our student government is the many opportunities for students to sit on the committees that make decisions affecting student life. Out of our 20 senate seats we have seven that need to be filled with my appointments. Organizations that need appointments include the ASUAF Senate, Food Advisory Board, TAB Board, ASUAF Concert Board, specific event committees and many more committees that exist, which assess the direction of UAF and student life. If you would like to become an active component in student governance here on campus please communicate these desires with me as soon as you can.

A main goal of mine is to make ASUAF the informational and campaigning hub for students at TVC, RHA, Club Council, GSO, Greek Council, Honor Societies, West Ridge, Lower Campus, Upper Campus, off-campus, and on-campus and for students both traditional and non-traditional to know that their voice and issues are strengthened by the student union they have invested in. Your 35 dollars is a wise investment and it is my job to make sure that never changes.

It is my hope that every one of you at least stops by the ASUAF office once this year to learn more about your university or to convey issues that are specific to your student needs. Again my name is Joseph Blanchard, I can be contacted at 474-5896 or by e-mail at fypres@uaf.edu and my office is located in the Wood Center between the bowling alley and The Pub.
