Mack Hughes defended his thesis on March 5th, titled “Direct and cascading effects of sea star wasting on rocky intertidal communities.”
In 2013 and 2014, sea star wasting caused a mass mortality event on the coasts from Alaska to Mexico. This phenomenon decimated many populations, affecting twenty species of sea stars.
On March 29th, the recently established labor union of UA graduate workers, AGWA-UAW, concluded its Strike Authorization Vote. Of 296 votes, 95% voted “yes” to authorize a potential graduate worker strike.
With Fairbanks-area local, Jeff Reid, finishing under the Burled Arch in Nome on March 16th, the 2024 Iditarod is complete with twenty-nine of the original thirty-eight mushers finishing the entire race. This year was an eventful race with more than one record broken, tragic dog deaths on the trail for the first time in years, snowmachine harassment of the mushers, and a competitive race full of veterans and rookies.
This past fall, I had the privilege of interviewing the magnificent Seattle based DJ, DancingFaraZ, prior to his performance at Starvation Gulch. After an absolutely fired-up performance, he’s back on campus for this year’s SpringFest (and we’re back with another interview!)

One doesn’t have to follow the sport of dog mushing to know what the Iditarod is. I’ve met people from the East Coast, Sweden, Germany, and the UK who watch the notorious race from behind their computer screens, and every year, thousands of fans congregate at the starting line. However, few could comprehend the amount of effort, money, and planning that comes before even getting to the weather-beaten, moose-infested, 1,000-mile trail. This year, I got a close glimpse of the Iditarod mania that happens before the race starts because my dad, Will Rhodes, is running it.
In late February, the university walked away from the table and canceled several days of bargaining after UAF students went to Juneau to gain funding for the university’s pursuit of R1 status. Achieving R1 status benefits the university because it attracts more funding. To achieve R1 status, the university must graduate a certain number of PhD students each year. The university is not meeting that number because it struggles to recruit, retain, and support students.
Before they are set to open for DJ Dancing FaraZ at SpringFest, I sat down with the Brothers Ramirez to ask a few questions about their music, their origins, and their hopes for the future as DJs.
