A New Frat on Campus?

"For lack of a better word, we want to become a workhorse for student government and student activities [at UAF]," said Sven Gilkey, the man responsible for attempting to resurrect Alpha Phi Omega on campus.

The co-ed fraternity, previously active at UAF during the 1960's, seems focused more on service projects than the usual college frat fodder.

Says Gilkey, "It seems that a lot of the traditions at UAF are starting to falter due to lack of involvement. I hope that Alpha Phi Omega will be able to help people like [Student Activities Coordinator] Jeff Stepp organize UAF events."

Gilkey noticed early on that Alpha Phi Omega's charter abided by the same leadership and community values as he was involved in whilst with the Boy Scouts. Last October, Gilkey began recruiting people to help in getting Alpha Phi Omega off the ground.

"We have about ten to eleven students active right now. This Sunday (02/20/05), we'll be going through the process of getting official recognition by UAF and the national organization."

When asked about the formalizing of Alpha Phi Omega at UAF, Gilkey responded, "There's a list of about 20 service projects that we'll have to complete this summer. Hopefully, we can achieve official accreditation by next fall."

In the near future, however, Alpha Phi Omega looks to be involved with Spring Fest and possibly assisting with the Tailgate Party for the Governor's Cup in early March.

"Alpha Phi Omega is perfect for anyone who maybe doesn't want to be as involved as, say, student government requires, but still wants to be a part of UAF and help out," Gilkey said.
