ASUAF's recycling program has always been on shaky ground. When all-star director Jason Lazarus stepped down last September, ASUAF scrambled to pick up the pieces, and with a constant shortage of volunteers, the department looked to be in trouble. But, with the help of eco-friendly activists like Jeffrey Wells, UAF's recycling looks to be heading towards greener pastures...or whiter snowfields, or...less dirty...things...associated with landscapes. A first-year freshman from Minnesota, Wells has taken on the recycling duties for Moore Hall. Operating a system that monitors bins on every other floor, Wells has encouraged a number of "Bin Sponsors" to accept responsibility for distilling the trash from the plastic bags and cans. Wells himself leads the fifth floor of Moore, ensuring that the ASUAF Assistant Director of Recycling is informed when the bins are ready for pickup. "I have always been environment conscious," reports Wells, who has recently been looking to step-up his activities. Wells continues, "We'd like to have bins on every floor. So far, people have been really supportive...It would be nice to see more people get involved." Started in late October, Wells' volunteer program now seems remarkably efficient. "We don't get a lot of problems because the floor sponsors put their names on the bin," Wells says of his personalized setup. "Soon, we'll be putting fliers on everyone's door to remind them of the (recycling) bins...so that more people will use them." Count on those from Minnesota to come and clean up Alaska's filthy, gene-muddled lands. Or just count on responsible and conscientious people. You know, whichever.
