Art show displays students' varied talents |

This
semester's Student Art Show displayed a diverse spread of work, created by the
just as diverse students of UAF. Talent
was shown in all sorts of mediums, from traditional arts of painting and drawing
to the closer-to-home Alaskan Native arts, such as woodcarving and beadwork. The
number of different mediums and variety within the mediums was truly remarkable,
considering the limited resources of the University. The
walls of the gallery were covered mainly with paintings with some carvings,
etchings, and prints making an appearance as well.
Two of Valerie Cline's paintings that were not included in her B.F.A.
thesis show that inhabited the gallery the last few weeks, made an appearance. Sprouting
up across the gallery floor were large metal sculptures, ranging from the
abstract to the practical. A wooden bench pressed up against a wall of prints
and paintings looked just like a comfortable place to sit until you noticed the
intricately carved metal back. The
artworks were not just limited to the confines of the gallery. The pieces spilled out from the gallery, flowing out towards
the Great Hall and along the display cases lining the hall outside the Art
Office. Between
the Art Department and the Great Hall was a display case filled with ceramic
pieces of varying uses and colors, from a brilliant blue eating set with
matching chopsticks to a natural aged-looking brown vessel. Along
the side of the Art Office door, jewelry of all types and sizes was laid out.
The earrings, pendants, rings and necklaces shined with detail begging to be
inspected with a closer eye. On the opposite wall, running the length of the
hallway, display cases sit full of drawings, prints and a few paintings. Prints
and etchings seemed to be the main focus here.
Lining the bottom of some of the display cases were metal sculptures and
castings, including an interesting cast of what appeared to be two Styrofoam
cups balanced together. The
lighting in the gallery and the layout of the pieces throughout the gallery and
the display cases kept your eyes and body moving, trying to capture all the
different items, while at the same time inviting you in closer to take a more
detailed look. The
Student Art Show is going on now in the Art Gallery adjacent to the Great Hall.
The show will end on Dec. 16. |
