303 students vote in ASUAF elections

ASUAF elections have come and gone, adding four new students to the senate's ranks.

New senators include Nick Brewer, Anthony Strong, Preston Miller and Jamethon Luther. Miller also won a seat on the Concert Board as the only nominee.

Sophomore Senate Chair Joe Blanchard tied with junior volleyball player April Blandford for the most votes, with 191. Hadahra Ben-Israel received the fewest votes of senate candidates listed on the ballot, with 141.

For the student regent nomination, Melissa Takaaze received 151 votes while Ian-Michael Herbert received 141. ASUAF will now forward both names to Gov. Frank Murkowski for consideration.

ASUAF had not validated results in the student commissioner election at press time. No nominees were listed on the ballot.

Less than 5 percent of students taking three or more credits voted. Turnout increased slightly from last year, from 269 to 303.

In an online survey accompanying the ballot, students decided they did not think the student government should have a flag, with a vote of 53 to 22. Only 13 out of 74 students were aware of UAF's internship program.

Over half of 73 respondents used ASUAF's beverage service. Most who said they used the service also said they did not bring their own mug.
