Women's basketball has mixed weekend at Cal State

The University of Alaska Fairbanks' women's basketball team had mixed results in California this weekend.

The Nanooks defeated host Cal State Stanislaus, 72-59, at the Stanislaus Farm Supply Classic at Warrior Arena Friday evening.

UAF led throughout the game.  Senior forward Cody Burgess and sophomore forward Marsha Schirack had 17 points each to lead UAF.  Senior guard Andrea Durny added 13 points and senior guard Adrienne Taalak contributed 10.

Burgess had eight rebounds as the Nanooks won the battle of the boards, 44-39.

UAF took a five-point lead at halftime, 35-30, and steadily built their advantage down the stretch.

"I'm real proud of our team," said UAF Head Coach Lynne Andrew. "We played very aggressively on defense and we just kept pushing the ball down court on offense and got some easy baskets. We executed well the whole game and kept battling."

Saturday evening was another story.

Cal State Bakersfield took a 45-29 halftime lead and defeated the University of Alaska Fairbanks' women's basketball team, 87-66 Saturday evening.

Senior guard Adrienne Taalak led the Nanooks with 19 points, senior forward Cody Burgess added 17, and Valerie Hartman added 11. The Nanooks outrebounded the Roadrunners, 34-29, but turned the ball over 26 times.

"We played hard, but it just wasn't out night," said UAF Head Coach Lynne Andrew. "They came out and got the jump on us. We tried to play an aggressive defense, but we got tentative. We didn't shoot the ball very well, and they did."

Alaska Fairbanks fell to 2-1 with the defeat, while CSUB improved to 1-1 with the win. UAF will return home to play Utah Valley State on Friday evening in the opening round of the Mount McKinley Bank/North Star Invitational Tournament.
