Food Review: Big Daddy's Barbeque

Big Daddy's Barbeque is located at 923 Old Steese Highway, and has some of the best barbeque that I have had in a long time.  I first had a taste of Big Daddy's at the fair this summer, where I had the pulled pork sandwich: a Kaiser roll stuffed to the breaking point with warm, seasoned, tender pulled pork.  It will only set you back $7.50.

Hearing that the pulled pork wasn't the only tasty treat, I took a friend with me to the restaurant to see what else there was to offer. Walking in, there was a buffet table, a bar, and plenty of booths and tables to accommodate the hungry masses. Taking a seat and glancing around, diners will notice the plaques, ribbons and awards of the many barbeque contests and cook-offs that Big Daddy's has entered and won.

The menu contains a little of everything--appetizers, lunch and dinner options. The combination plates offer an entrée and two sides. Glancing at the menu, I decide that the sandwich consisting of pulled beef with roasted peppers and onions was the best bet for me. My dining companion went with the pulled pork and sides of fried okra. The waitress came back surprisingly fast with our plates and a six-pack of sauces (more about those in a moment).  The hoagie roll placed in front of me was split open and stuffed almost beyond capacity with seasoned shredded meat and chunks of roasted peppers and onions.

The sauces available make you want to take a second bite before you've even finished the first, complimenting the taste of the meats. The sweet sauce is just that--sweet, but not too sweet. There's a zip of warmth to the sauce, making it easy love. The hot sauce is one that has both flavor and heat, but not a mind-blowing, tongue-numbing concoction. Both sauces allow diners to liberally douse said sandwich and dive in, sleeves pulled up, of course.

We walked out of the restaurant with doggie bags in hand, stomachs full and mouths happy. Dollar for dollar, this food is worth what I paid and then some. The next time I crave barbeque Big Daddy's is where I will head to, sure to take a friend and a shirt that I don't mind getting sauce on.
