A "run" of colds invades UAF |

Confirming what many had already sensed, university health officials said that a "run" of colds has hit students less than a month into school. Although numbers were not available, Dr. John Fellerath of the Center for Health and Counseling said a larger-than-normal number of students have been coming to the center with runny noses and other cold symptoms. The student began reporting symptoms during the last two weeks. The high numbers could be due to many factors, said nurse practitioner Donna Paterick. Students entering a new environment might be encountering higher levels of germs than their immune systems are used to. Dorm rooms could be another instigator due to students close contact with others, she said. The smoke could also be irritating peoples throats, though Paterick said this was doubtful. Southeastern students might be having a hard time adapting to the dry climate, she said, potentially damaging the mucus membrane. She suggested buying a humidifier or using a saltwater nasal spray. Students suffering from a cold should eat healthily, drink plenty of fluids, and get adequate rest, Paterick said. But most importantly, they should wash their hands regularly. |
