To the Student Body - In regards to the recent issues with the ASUAF elections, I feel that there are certain points that should be made. Presidential candidate Mr. Brandon Maitlen was accused of "bribery with food" as well as "undue influence" towards the student body. Mr. Walker can easily be accused of bribery with food as well as undue influence. On the day of the elections, Mr. Walker's banners could be seen from the voting stations. Also, Mr. Walker uses free drink within his flyers to influence votes. The flyers state that if Mr. Walker is no longer in office, the free hot chocolate will be gone. Another issue that concerns me is that Mr. Walker degrades and demeans women. His slogan for the campaign is "Need some T & A? Hit that!" Even after formal complaints were made by numerous females, signs that carried the slogan were found to still be hanging up around campus. Do you want a woman-hating man as a representative of the student body of UAF? Mr. Walker also has been known in the past to misuse funds. Case in point, Mr. Walker had used school club funds to purchase alcohol at The Pub. Using academic funds of any kind for alcohol is against the bi-laws of the University. As a consequence, the club is on probation for a year and Mr. Walker was asked to step down as club president. Is this the type of leadership that you want? I will be graduating and leaving UAF, but I am concerned about the leadership that is emerging from the student body. It appears to me that Mr. Walker has a lot of energy and time to devote to politics. If this is truly the case, then he needs to complete his credits, graduate, and run for a public office. Right now, students need to focus on finals and papers, not on an election scandal initiated by a leader who has questionable ethics and will not take a loss gracefully. Respectfully, Yvette Martin |
