Nanooks pluck redhawks

Last Thursday night the Seattle Redhawks met a UAF women's basketball team that is searching for the remedies to a disappointing season.  After a promising start in November, the Nanooks are 1-13 in their last 14 games, including a 68-60 loss to the Redhawks in January.  But the ‘Nooks haven't given up, and this time the results were different.

Thanks mainly to the unbelievable play of guard Adrienne Taalak, the Nanooks led by as many as 14 points early in the game, yet characteristic stretches of poor shooting and unforced turnovers enabled the Redhawks to come back and tie the game at 35 by the end of the first half.

The lead changed hands many times in the second half, making for what would have been an exiting game had it not been hampered by ridiculously bad officiating.  The bad calls even prompted rookie head coach Lynne Andrew to get a technical foul late in the game.  Luckily Taalak proved to be too much for the Redhawks, going 13-18 in shooting and finishing the night with 36 points, just two shy of the conference record.  Her play earned the Nanooks a much-needed vicotory, 71-63.

After the game, Andrew not only spoke of Taalak's big night, but also commented on the play of forward Marsha Schirack and Karen Rabung, who both continued to play well after collecting four fouls apiece.  Andrew said that the problem with the team is not in their actions, but in their reactions, saying with ecumenical sports euphemism, "when you go, you gotta go to score."
