Nanooks lose heartbreaker Friday

After battling valiantly for forty minutes before a national television audience on College Sports Television, the University of Alaska Fairbanks watched the University of Michigan score three goals in the final period Friday night to claim a hard-fought 4-1 victory.

The loss dropped the Nanooks to 12-14-1 on the season and 11-11-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The Wolverines improved to 19-7-1 on the year and 14-4-1 in conference play.

With the score tied 1-1 midway through the third period, UAF's Curtis Fraser was whistled for a five-minute major penalty for charging the goaltender. And Michigan took full advantage of being on the power play, scoring two goals to take a 3-1 lead. Eric Werner got a shot past Nanook goaltender Preston McKay at the 12:20 mark and Brandon Rogers slipped one into the net with 6:17 remaining in the game.

The Wolverines' final goal came from Jason Ryznar with less than a minute to go to provide the final 4-1 margin.

The Nanooks outshot the Wolverines 37-34 and went 1-5 on the power play. Michigan was 2-7 on power play opportunities. The Wolverines were whistled for seven penalties for 14 minutes, while UAF was tagged for eight penalties for 27 minutes.

Both teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first period Friday night. The Wolverines got on the board first with a goal from Ryznar with 10:24 gone in the second period. However, the Nanooks came right back and tied the game on a Kelly Czuy goal at the 14:09 mark.
