Wild & Wonderful Woodworking
Close your eyes and imagine: entire ecosystems sustained by trees nearly four hundred feet above the earth, entire communities sheltered below woody shrubs less than a foot high. Not so long ago, wood gave our ancestors what they needed to make a life: shade and shelter, yes, and also fuel for the fire, sap to sweeten the pot and heal wounds. The forest yielded bowls and baskets, tankards, scoops and funnels, spoons and shovels. Today, though technology has transformed our lives and nature’s world, wood still shelters us, and like those who came before, we are still moved by its beauty and utility— in the forest and in the hand.
The following courses offer all ages an opportunity to learn the skills necessary to work successfully with this renewable resource, wood.
Profiles: John Manthei, cabinet/ furniture maker, architectural woodworker and artist, has been working with wood since he was a youngster. Phil Marshall has studied traditional hand woodcarving in Austria and Norway, and under German and Italian masters here in the US. See Phil’s website at http://www.polhavnwoodfabrik.com/ for more information.
An additional opportunity is available for on-site woodworking during “Week in the Woods.” Camp out July 6–10 and learn from master woodworkers at this event for the entire family. For more information contact John Manthei at (808) 345-8184.
