Joe Usibelli has received numerous state and community honors ranging from Alaskan of the Year in 1983 to a UAF Honorary Doctor of Letters in 1996. His job listings range from a janitor for Jessen’s Weekly in 1953 to President of the Usibelli Coal Mine from 1964-1986. Since 1986 he has served as the Chairman of the Board for Usibelli Coal Mine. Joe is a man of numerous interests and talents. Besides his lifelong interest in mining, Joe enjoys traveling, fishing, flying, scuba diving and growing grapes in the Napa Valley of California.

Come listen to interviewer Robert Hannon tease out the story of this long-time community and business leader, miner, philanthropist and lifelong Alaskan, Joe Usibelli.

Deborah Blum - Cocktails and Cyanide

Pulitzer Prize winning science writer and Helen Firstbrook Franklin Professor of Journalism at the University of Wisconsin, Deborah Blum will take you on an entertaining and educational tour through the history of poisons. Blum will introduce you to some very clever homicidal killers and the early scientists who worked to determine what puts us at risk.

Deborah is the author of six books including The Field Guide for Science Writers, The Monkey Wars, Ghost Hunters and her most recent book, The Poisoner’s Handbook which was selected as one of the 100 best books in 2010 by Amazon. Some of the many publications she writes for are The Guardian, The Wall Street Journal, Slate, The New York Times, Mother Jones, Utne Reader, Science News and The Huffington Post.
