Neil Davis
, emeritus professor of geophysics at UAF and author of The Aurora Watcher’s Handbook, will discuss the controversial mystery of auroral sound and how human perceptions relate to that topic.

June 3
darleen masiak
, a Fairbanks artist working in both 2D and 3D formats, will address the need for artists to continue to explore all aspects of making art whether large or small scale, 2D or 3D, painting or sketching.

June 10
Brian Barnes
, director of UAF’s Institute of Arctic Biology, will present the differing ways that animals survive the cold, dark, and long winters. He will talk about the strategies of wood frogs, insects, ground squirrels and black bears.

June 17
Terrence Cole
, UAF professor, author, and historian, will present a lecture entitled “The D. A. Never Rests: The Rise of Ted Stevens in 1950’s Fairbanks.”

June 24
Dirk Lummerzheim
, professor of aeronomy, will speak on the colors of the aurora, what causes them and what we can learn from the colors.

July 1
Peter Webley
, a post-doctoral fellow at the Geophysical Institute, will describe techniques used to detect volcanic ash clouds, predict their movements and warn of potential hazards. He will demonstrate how he uses Google Earth in his research.

July 8
Dave Payer, ecologist with the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, will share his expertise and experience floating the rivers of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

July 15
No lecture—special event featuring author and educator Marion Nestle in the Davis Concert Hall. See page 15.

July 22
Dermot Cole, Fairbanks newspaper columnist and author of seven books about Alaska, will discuss “Alaska at 50: The First Half-Century of Alaska Statehood.” Cole’s most recent book is North to the Future: The Alaska Story, 1959–2009.

July 29
Derek Sikes, curator of insects at the University of Alaska Museum of the North, will speak on recent efforts to document the Alaskan arthropod fauna including discoveries in the Aleutians.

August 5
Charles Mason, an internationally recognized photographer and head of the UAF Journalism Department, will present a lecture entitled “Ravens, Dinosaurs, and Tourists: A Fairbanks Photographer Looks at Alaska and Beyond.”

August 12
Lance Mackey, the only dog musher to win both the Yukon Quest and the Iditarod Sled Dog Race in the same year (2007 and 2008), will speak on growing up in a dog mushing world.
