Geophysical Institute
Visit the world-renowned Geophysical Institute where scientists study subjects ranging from the center of the Earth to the center of the sun. Visit the Alaska Satellite Facility to learn about the work done with polar orbiting satellites and visit the Alaska Earthquake Information Center’s seismology lab. Meet in the Elvey Building lobby. International Arctic Research Center
Walk through the Syun-Ichi Akasofu Building, home of the International Arctic Research Center, where scientists study arctic and global climate. Robert G. White Large Animal Research Station
See muskoxen, caribou, and reindeer close-up. Discover the world of these unique animals. Take Farmer’s Loop Road to Ballaine Road, turn left on Yankovich Road. The research station is one mile on the right. All-hours viewing of the animals is available throughout the year. Cold Climate Housing Research Center
Visit the Cold Climate Housing Research Center (CCHRC), a state of the art facility that promotes the development, use, and testing of energy efficient, durable, healthy, and cost effective building technologies for Alaska and the world’s cold climate regions. Georgeson Botanical Garden Tour
Each year the GBG tests over 300 cultivars of annual flowering plants and thousands of perennials. Visit the extensive gardens during the summer to enjoy the wide variety of plants that grow in this northern climate. Poker Flat Research Range
Arctic Region Supercomputing Center
Tours: Wednesdays, 1 p.m. June 3–August 26 (Tour size limited to 20)
Visit the ARSC Discovery Lab and take a virtual tour of Alaska’s only supercomputing center. Learn how virtual reality, 3-D applications are helping scientists better understand our world. Tour size is limited to 20 and is on a first-come, first-served basis. Tours start at the back loading dock of the Rasmuson Library on Tanana Loop.
